Bullying Prevention & Positive School Culture

   MSW

Students learn best when they feel safe, thus creating a positive school experience is essential.
The best intervention is prevention education.

School Anti- Bullying Rules

  1. We will not bully others
  2. We will try to include students who are left out
  3. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home.

Here are a few techniques to quickly review and practice when adults witness bullying situation.

How to Handle Harassment in the Hallways in 3 Minutes!

  1. Stop the Harassment- Interrupt the comment; address the bully behavior in public without addressing the target.
  2. Identify the Harassment- Label the form of harassment: example: “That was a harassing comment/put down based upon race” Do not debate whether the target is in fact a member of the identified group.
  3. Broaden the Response- Do not personalize your response at this stage: example: “We at Virgil do not harass people.”
  4. Ask for Change in Future Behavior- Personalize the response: “Chris, please pause and think before you act.”
  5. Check in with the Target- Focus on the student who is the target-“ If this continues, please tell me and I will take further action. We want everyone to be safe at this school.”
